Following Bradâs experience with picking the man out of the pictures, Barb became concerned for their safety again. Brad tried to calm her fears by reminding her that the guy had never seen him during the session, and Detective Conner said he wouldnât know that Brad had identified him. Even if he did know, nothing good would come of harming Brad or Barb because they had already told the authorities what they knew. And should something happen, the man would be the first person the police would suspect.
Barbâs fear seemed to subside a bit, but Brad had his own worries. Others could also be paid if this guy was just a hired hit man. Whoever hired him was doing a good job of staying in the shadows.
A couple of weeks later, Brad had a challenging morning at work. He needed some time to think through a few things, so he decided to take an extended lunch. He grabbed an Uber and headed to the Varsity.
The downtown Varsity was probably the most famous hot dog place in the world, a destination for tourists and locals alike. There were no servers, and everyone ordered their meal from a long counter. You could get any combination of hot dog, hamburger, chili, cheese, and slaw that you desired. Lunch was typically under ten or twelve bucks, but you were as likely to see executives there as blue-collar workers. Celebrity sightings were not unheard of. It was always crowded, but service was quick with seating for 800, plus car hop.
As he stood in one of fifteen lines to order his lunch at the counter, he heard a couple guys in the next line getting worked up about politics. âWe need to shut those racist sons-of-bitches up so we can get something done in this country,â one said.
âThere needs to be a law against some of the trash they spew,â said the other. Brad knew that twenty steps away there were probably people going off on the other side of the political spectrum. He saw no solution for the divide in the country.
He reached the front of the line. The gal behind the counter barked, âWhaddya have?â He ordered two chili cheese slaw dogs, onion rings, and a Coke. He found a table and sat down with his tray. The rhetoric he had heard stuck with Brad. He never thought heâd see the country in such a state of downright hatred between people. He wondered if everyone was going nuts.
His mind turned to the election fraud issue. If someone were able to manipulate elections as they may have in Pennsylvania, the country would soon be on a fast track to a place he hated to imagine. He thought about his daughters and their families and wondered what their lives would be like as they got older. What would his grandson learn in school? Would he grow up to experience the same America Brad had always known?
âTillman! Fancy meeting you here,â came a voice over the din of the crowded restaurant.
